Materials
Stone sculptures are carved from natural stones, each with unique properties:
- Marble – Soft, porous, prone to staining and weathering.
- Granite – Hard, durable, resistant to weathering.
- Limestone – Soft, porous, and sensitive to acid.
- Sandstone – Grainy texture, porous, and weather-sensitive.
- Alabaster – Soft, delicate, and prone to scratches.
- Soapstone – Soft, smooth, and slightly waxy.
- Onyx – Soft, reacts with acids.
Care & Maintenance
1. Regular Dusting
- Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth or feather duster.
- Avoid rough or abrasive materials that can scratch the surface.
2. Cleaning
- Wipe with a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately.
- For deeper cleaning, use mild soap and water (especially for non-porous stones like granite).
- Avoid acidic cleaners (vinegar, lemon, ammonia, bleach), as they can damage porous stones like marble, limestone, and alabaster.
3. Stain Prevention
- Stone is porous and can absorb liquids, leading to stains.
- Apply a stone sealant to protect from moisture and spills (especially for marble, limestone, and sandstone).
4. Polishing
- Use a stone polish or mineral oil for stones like soapstone and alabaster to enhance their luster.
- For high-polish finishes, a buffing cloth can restore shine.
5. Protecting from Damage
- Keep sculptures away from high-traffic areas to prevent accidental bumps.
- Avoid placing heavy objects on delicate carvings.
- Use felt pads underneath if placed on hard surfaces to prevent scratches.
6. Outdoor Stone Sculptures
- Granite and sandstone hold up well outdoors, but softer stones like marble and limestone can erode.
- Apply a weather-resistant sealant to protect against moisture and temperature changes.
- If possible, position sculptures in a sheltered area to reduce exposure to rain and direct sunlight.
