What is serpentine stone?
Serpentine is a hydrothermally altered rock, named for its green, scaly, snake-like appearance, and is composed of a group of related phyllosilicate minerals. It forms when existing rocks, such as peridotite, metamorphose in the presence of seawater, resulting in unique colors and patterns. Used as an ornamental stone in carvings, jewelry, and architectural features, it is relatively soft, with a hardness of 3-6 on the Mohs scale, making it suitable for gently worn items but prone to scratches.
